HOW TO MAKE A CIPHER WHEEL

A super convenient tool in every escape room or escape game: a decipher wheel. With this you can convert secret messages or hints into a code that you have to decipher with a deciphering wheel. You don't need much to make it yourself.

MAKING A DECIPHER WHEEL

  1. Cut out the circles and place them on top of each other. The largest circle on the bottom, the smallest on top.
  2. Carefully poke a hole in the center of all circles. You can use a toothpick for this. Then attach the circles to each other with, for example, a split pin.

HOW TO USE A DECIPHER WHEEL

  1. You always need a hint/key to read the decipher wheel. Choose a letter or symbol on the largest circle and smallest circle. When these two are on top of each other, the wheel is set up properly to use. If the wheel is set correctly, you no longer have to turn.
  2. Write down the secret code you want to use in full in letters.
  3. Find the secret symbol for each letter of the code until your code is complete.
  4. To read the secret code, the recipient always needs a 'key'. This shows which letter must appear on which symbol in order to read the entire code. The receiver can then set the deciphering wheel itself and read all letters / symbols in a good way.

NOTES

  • In the photos we have used a Christmas theme. The symbols here are Christmas figures, but you can of course choose different themes or symbols.
  • Deciphering wheels exist in all shapes and sizes, for example also with 3 circles. This seems difficult, but it is very easy. Go play with it.
